Schools to offer free meals to all students again next year

TPS students can receive free breakfast and lunch in the 2022-23 school year, regardless of income.

This is a result of a federal school meal funding option that allows school districts with high eligibility for free- and reduced-price meals to provide free meals to all students. With this option, most students are also eligible for internet service discounts (depending on the provider) and other community-based discounts.

More than a meal – every survey counts
Due to this programming change, select families will be asked to complete a Household Information Survey (this replaces the Free and Reduced-Price Meal Application families might be familiar with from past years).

When families complete the new Household Information Survey, it helps fund things like before- and after-school programs, school counselors, health and wellness services, and classroom resources. It also ensures that students who are eligible for low-income benefits and discounts are recognized and can take advantage of additional benefits, including things like fee waivers for ASB cards.

If you’re asked to complete a survey, please note:

  • Only one survey per family is required
  • TPS will email the survey to select families in July. The email will come from our Nutrition Services group.
  • If your household is already directly certified for these benefits, you will receive a confirmation from the school district, and you will not receive a Household Information Survey.

Menu options
As the supply chain opens up, school menu options will continue to expand. Tacoma Public Schools was pleased to be able to bring back fresh fruits and vegetables to menus this school year, and we’ll to continue to add more nutritious items to the menu as they become available.
